  65. GENERAL INFORMATION
  66.  
  67. Engineers and technicians make extensive use of voltmeters and ohmmeters
  68. to calibrate and troubleshoot electronic equipment. Teaching and learning
  69. meter reading is easy.  Learning to troubleshoot with meters is much more
  70. difficult. Real circuit faults are rarely found by simple logic where
  71. value measured equates to a specific solution. Rather, real world
  72. troubleshooting requires analyzing several measurements and then drawing
  73. the right conclusions even with incomplete information and inaccurate
  74. instruments. Meter Challenge provides learners with a wide variety of
  75. simulated real world troubleshooting problems to solve. Learners can
  76. practice on each exercise many times because the solutions and parameters
  77. are different each time the program is used.

  79. Meter Challenge has a built-in problem generator engine which
  80. selects and designs a new problem variation each time the program
  81. is used.  The generated problems mimic the real world in a number
  82. of  respects including meter inaccuracy, measurement drift,
  83. incomplete technical data, and even time pressure. The program
  84. adds interest and purpose to learning by putting the learner in a
  85. spacecraft with electrical problems. Only by use of careful
  86. measurements, proper circuit analysis, and  logical thinking can
  87. the ship be repaired. Learner results are graded and timed for each
  88. mission completed. A certificate can be optionally printed after
  89. each program mission is finished.  The certificate includes the
  90. learner's name, score and time on task.

  92. Meter Challenge allows learners to select one of nine basic circuit
  93. problems. Five problems allow use of the ohmmeter while four allow use of
  94. a voltmeter in solving the problem.  The program generates 625 connection
  95. variations for each of the nine problems. Component values and operating
  96. voltages have several thousand possible combinations.  Learners are
  97. unlikely to encounter precisely the same problem twice. They can put the
  98. program in a "cheat" mode in order to practice the troubleshooting
  99. process. Certificates can't be printed while the "cheat" mode is
  100. operating.

  102. Meter Challenge is not intended to be a "stand-alone" teaching and
  103. learning tool. Rather, the program is intended to reinforce and add
  104. depth to other learning processes. A reasonable understanding of
  105. troubleshooting with meters should be developed using classroom
  106. instruction, textbooks, or other methods before using Meter
  107. Challenge.

  109.  The nine activities in Meter Challenge can be used to teach and
  110. reinforce more than troubleshooting concepts. The circuits involve
  111. electrical concepts including:

  118. Series aiding and opposing voltage sources

  124. Learners must have a working knowledge of the concepts in the topics
  125. listed in order to succeed on all of the Meter Challenge missions.

  129. Meter Challenge can be used to document skills accomplished at one level
  130. of training to be credited to another level of training. Agreements can
  131. be developed between secondary and post- secondary schools to credit
  132. students who have acquired specific skills at the secondary level. The
  133. students do not have to repeat the acquired skills at the post-secondary
  134. level.  A problem in implementation of this practical process is
  135. documentation of skills accomplished. Meter Challenge makes this process
  136. easy. Meter Challenge certificates can be added to each student's
  137. portfolio to document the acquisition of the skills listed in the
  138. proceeding paragraph.
